Behind many playground rhymes is some dark piece of history entombed in playful words for children to repeat.
Ring around the Rosie, London Bridge is Falling, Eeny Meeny Miny Moe. Each reveals a different meaning as the singers go from playful youth to thoughtful adults.
Going On A Treasure Hunt is one that remains largely obscure, but was practiced nearly daily in my childhood schoolyard. The many versions, some more gruesome than the next, were all aimed at giving a friend the sensation of goosebumps.
Here I share my narrative take on the rhyme capturing its haunting cadence, chilling words, and potential darker meaning.
Spiders Crawling up your back
Going on a treasure hunt x marks the spot. Four big boulders, one tiny dot. Spiders crawling up your back, blood dripping down. Spiders crawling up your back, blood dripping down. Spiders crawling.. Spiders Crawling. Crawling. CRAWLING. I can feel them prying. Pulling. Here in the darkness, why did I come here? A treasure hunt.
